Question #1: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, to contribute to group efforts over time. The time I positively influenced others was my Junior and Senior year at Lindsay High School. Since I was part of ASB my junior year, it helped me be part of and encourage others to be involved with school activities, such as rallies, games, and after school activities. I influenced people to be involved in rallies by helping those who are in charge of setting up rallies to make the activities more active and fun. When being on the bleachers I tell people in my class to be louder than other classes. I try to come up with different ideas on how to show my school spirit and of course motivate others to have as much school spirit as they can. Last year during break and lunch some classmates and I would set out a table or two and split up into groups two groups to do face painting on students. I was also part of the poster committee, in which we create posters to motivate others to join the games. I encouraged students to be part of the games, but not only varsity, JV as well. Sadly, this year I didn’t get ASB as an elective, but I still continue going to the games to support our players. I try to convince as many people as I can to attend the games, not only football games, but winter sports and spring sports as well. Question #5: Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement? The time I faced a significant challenge was a couple months ago, my junior year. I began the year in behind paste classes, due to the previous two years. As a freshman and sophomore I didn’t care much about my grades, all I would do was sit in my classes and talk to my classmates. Every time I had an assignment to do I would wait till the end of the semester to turn it in. The ending of my sophomore year I overheard a conversation between a group of people saying that junior year is the year colleges looked into. That was when everything hit me. I realized I had to step it up and improve my scores if I planned on graduating with everyone else. I managed to stay on pace in some classes and finish the previous unfinished classes. Though I wasn’t 7 out of 7 throughout the year, I still tried my hardest to finish everything I needed and try to strive for level 4’s. At the end of the year I was satisfied with my grades and my GPA. I started my senior year fresh, on pace in all my classes. They say senior year is the easiest year, but I chose to challenge myself by electing tough classes; Algebra 2, Chemistry, and CNA. Junior year has showed me a huge change, not only in school, but personality wise as well. It was a difficult and stressful year trying catching up on unfinished classes and staying on pace 7 out of 7, but by the end of the year it was all worth it. Question #6: Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you. My favorite academic subject is a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA). A CNA helps patients with healthcare needs under the supervision of a Nursing Assistant. It’s required to have good communication and patience skills. A Certified Nurse Assistant is my favorite academic subject because my major is registered nurse and it has helped me find a path to the career I want to be in. CNA is a great way to start learning how to work with patients by doing hands on. It has helped me understand more about the Medical Field. CNA will be a great experience for me to know how it’s going to be working as a Nurse. After finishing the class I will get a certificate from the class allowing me to apply and get a at Lindsay Gardens or any place where seniors are taken care of. Not only is the class showing us how to work with elders, but it has also showed us the proper way of doing CPR on a person. Although I don’t plan on working with Residents after the CNA class it will give me a great experience, which will benefit me to help my grandparents when they need any type of assistance.
Question #7: What have you done to make your school or community a better place? My Junior year at Lindsay High school I was part of ASB. ASB, also known as leadership helped me make high school and the community a better place. By being in ASB it has inspired me into being more involved with school activities. At the beginning of the school year I wasn’t part of much, but after the football games I became more involved. I would help the poster committee, by putting my creativity on posters on special events. In December, ASB students were chosen to help the Lindsay Police Department give out gifts for the children, gladly I was part of it. While being at the fire department learners and I were taking turns on giving out presents to the children and giving out hot chocolate. The day of Orange Blossom I helped set up for the fun run. At first I was helping those who needed help with signing their paperwork and getting their running numbers. Afterwards we gave them water bottles to stay hydrated. By the time people were done with their mile(s), we stood by the finish line cheering the people on. During the sport games I would go and support the players as much as I could. I enjoyed being part of ASB, not only did it help me make my school a better place, but it also helped me get out of my bubble. Although I didn’t get the class this year I still continue to be as involved as I was last year.
Personal Narrative
“Mija, come meet your new baby cousin”, that was the day my whole life changed. On September 2, 2004 I remember walking into the delivery room where my newborn cousin was born. As the years went by I watched her grow up little by little which has shaped me into the person I am today. Ever since she was a baby her mom has always an independent, hardworking mother of 4 children. While my aunt was at work my mom would do things that her mom was supposed to do. Over the time as I grew up I started taking over and I started taking care of her as if she was my sister. Growing up as an only child I learned to be independent, so when my parents were at work I would do chorus around the house. The beginning of high school was when things started getting a bit different. My mom and my aunt started working more hours, which meant I had to take care of my cousin, Jasmine, even more. “Alondra, can you make me something to eat?” I stood in shock; I didn’t know what to say, she would always ask for fast food. My mom never showed me how to cook anything other than the basics. I asked “what would you like to eat?” “Can you make me Enchiladas”, she responded. I didn’t have a choice other than to try and make them for her, so I called my mom, but she wouldn’t answer. I decided to look up the ingredients and see how they were made. “Hey Jasmine, get ready so we can go to the store and buy the things to make the enchiladas”. “Okay”, she said as she began to get ready. When we arrived to my house from the store, I started to make them. By the time they were ready, I was highly impressed. I liked them and Jasmine liked them. Every school night, my aunt takes jasmine to my house and she stays the night. Every morning I take her to her school and pick her up from school. I make her food and help her with her homework when she needs in; meanwhile her mom gets off work and picks her up. On weekends jasmines stays at my house day and night, my mom and I sometimes take her to the store and buy her anything that she needs. Taking care of Jasmine has completely changed my life, not only are we super close, but it’s also taught me how to cook and know how it is to have a sister. The days she’s out with her mom or brothers, our house feels completely blank. Both my parents and I have grown to lover her as if she was part of our family.
